In this talk, Dr Seth will be reviewing the challenges faced as he established an analytics practice and will share some of the specific case studies indicative of this evolution in analytics adoption for various business functions and competing on Analytics in aviation industry through new connected analytics offerings.

Competing on Analytics is a "Team Sport," but Which Sport?

Companies large and small are aggressively building infrastructure and capabilities to "compete on analytics," especially in categories being transformed and disrupted by technology, data and analytics. While producing insights is an important part of the value chain, integrating data and analytics into products, services and processes is a "team sport," requiring close cooperation and coordination across business units and analytics teams. Optum is boosting the ability of business leaders and analytics professionals to collaborate, innovate and accelerate deployment of strategies infused with data and analytics. In addition to technical skills through Optum's Data Science University, the company is also focusing on "soft skills" in its Analytics Catalyst program and related initiatives. Alex Barclay, SVP at Optum (part of United Health Group, a Fortune 10 company), will outline the capabilities required to compete on analytics and describe how the company is boosting these capabilities among executives, managers and analytics professionals.

Jennifer Priestley – Associate Dean of The Graduate College and the Director of the Analytics and Data Science Institute, Kennesaw State University

How the Evolution of Data Science is Changing the Knowledge Needs of its Practitioners

The evolving discipline of data science is changing the way universities approach education, research and funding. In particular, the way universities collaborate with the private sector for research and development has seen fundamental changes - at least when it comes to data science. And, importantly, this new private sector/university collaborative framework has, in turn, contributed to the evolution of Data Science for both parties where the focus has expanded beyond supporting proficiency in the "hard" skills to now also account for a needed understanding of the "soft" skills to be an effective practitioner. In this session, Dr. Jennifer Lewis Priestley, director of one of the country's first Ph.D. programs in Data Science, will talk about how the relationship between universities and private sector companies has been impacted by the evolution of data science in the business world.
